“New Girl” and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” Will Stage a Rare Comedy Crossover

‘New Girl’ and ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ Will Stage a Rare Comedy Crossover This Fall

Fox’s Tuesday series will split a full hour this October.

In a head-scratching move that simultaneously makes so much sense, New Girl and Brooklyn Nine-Nine are about to join forces.

Fox’s two longest-running comedies will crossover for a one-hour episode on Tuesday, Oct. 11, the network announced Monday at the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour. Per Fox’s latest schedule, New Girl and Brooklyn Nine-Nine already air back-to-back on Tuesday nights.

“The crossover episode has historically been the artistic high point of any show that has dared to attempt it,”  New Girl creator Elizabeth Meriwether quipped in a statement. “Maybe you remember Blackout Thursday on NBC, or even further back the infamous Alf/Gilligan’s Island crossover of the late 1980s. New Girl and Brooklyn Nine-Nine will proudly and humbly go where few shows have gone since the 1990s. We know we have big shoes to fill, and we look forward to disappointing everyone. There’s a 50 percent chance Alf will also be in both episodes. But there’s also a 50 percent chance that is a lie.”

Most networks are pretty crossover-happy these days, though not on the comedy front. The CW is plotting a massive event for its suite of DC Comics shows, NBC keeps loose borders between its five Dick Wolf productions and CBS enjoys the occasional meet-up in its NCIS and Criminal Minds universes. Fox has been largely been left out, though there was the Sleepy Hollow/Bones event last season.

What’s most unique about the New Girl/Brooklyn Nine-Nine crossover might be the fact that the two don’t even share a studio. Brooklyn comes from Universal Television, while New Girl is produced in-house at 20th Century Fox TV.

No immediate details about the episode were available, only that it would take place in New York (read: a Los Angeles studio subbing for New York), but the creators are clearly taking it all very seriously.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine crossing over with New Girl is very exciting, but (and this is supposed to be a secret) it’s just the first step,” said Brooklyn Nine-Nine co-creator Dan Goor in his own statement. “Stay tuned for our two casts to do a soulful R&B number on Empire, co-anchor the Fox 10 O’Clock News and connect for a touchdown on Fox NFL Sunday. But in all seriousness, we’re all huge fans of New Girl here at the Nine-Nine, and we’re excited to see our characters interact and to work with their incredible writers and producers. And also to see what their craft services are like, compared to ours.”

Zooey to Direct “New Girl” Season 6 Premiere

New Girl: Zooey Deschanel to direct season 6 premiere — exclusive

Who’s that girl behind the camera? It’s Zooey Deschanel!

The actress, who stars as Jess on New Girl, will make her directorial debut with the comedy’s season 6 premiere, EW has learned. Titled “House Hunt,” the episode will pick up three months after the season 5 finale, which saw Jess and Nick (Jake Johnson) part ways, Cece (Hannah Simone) and Schmidt (Max Greenfield) get married, and Winston (Lamorne Morris) carry out his best prank yet when he followed Cece and Schmidt all the way to the beach on their honeymoon, scaring them just as they settled in.

Since then, Jess has been distracting herself from her renewed romantic feelings for Nick by throwing herself into new hobbies while he’s been away in New Orleans with Reagan (Megan Fox, who’s set to return later in season 6). At the same time, Winston attempts to keep up his long-distance relationship with Aly (Nasim Pedrad), and newlyweds Cece and Schmidt go house hunting — the plot thread that inspired the episode title.

The cast had their first table read Monday afternoon for the season 6 premiere, and the exclusive photo of Deschanel’s new and improved name plate for the episode and the cover of the script can be seen below:

“New Girl” Renewed For Season 6

It took a few extra weeks of negotiations, but New Girl has secured a renewal for a sixth season at Fox. I hear a two-year pickup also was considered in the talks, which encountered a few bumps before a deal was a reached for a one-season pickup.

New Girl, created by Liz Meriwether, is Fox’s longest-running live-action comedy on the air, and it makes money for the company as it is produced by 20th Century Fox TV. New Girl was one of the first broadcast comedy series to ditch the traditional off-network syndication route for a rich deal at Netflix. It is also a legacy show for Fox — it put the network back on the comedy map, giving it its first live-action hit in a while with a monster ratings debut.

“Every network comedy should aspire to what Liz Meriwether is achieving in New Girl, with its bravura dialogue, inventive and witty performances by the talented cast and emotionally engaging storytelling,” said Fox’s David Madden. “The series is as creatively strong today as it ever was, we want to congratulate New Girl on reaching its milestone 100th episode and we can’t wait for the next subversive and hilarious chapter of these characters’ lives.”

New Girl joins fellow Fox comedies Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Last Man On Earth, which also have been renewed. The only remaining Fox half-hour series still in contention are freshmen Grandfathered and The Grinder. Both of them are in limbo, with likely one at best making it back next season. (Cooper Barrett’s Guide to Surviving Life and Bordertown are not expected to continue.)

New Girl, from 20th TV and Chernin Entertainment, was created by Meriwether who exec produces with Brett Baer, Dave Finkel, Jake Kasdan, Peter Chernin and Katherine Pope. Meriwether, Baer and Finkel are co-showrunners/writers.

New Girl stars Zooey Deschanel, Jake Johnson, Max Greenfield, Lamorne Morris and Hannah Simone. Guest stars include Megan Fox, Damon Wayans, Jr., David Walton, Nasim Pedrad, Sonequa Martin-Green, Kal Penn, Rob Riggle, Meghan Rath, Nora Dunn, Kim Wayans and Peter Gallagher.
